It was a day Will thought he had pushed from his mind forever; it was a word he had managed to forget.

Impure.

But since arriving in Egypt, since seeing his father for the first time in a long time, the memory of that day, that word, came flooding back.

It was an official letter on government stationery—a letter from his father in response to a nervous phone call Will had made to his dad shortly after his eighteenth birthday, telling Charles he was gay—that led to the accident. It was even the reason why Will had so easily forgotten about his father’s posting in Cairo. The young man had simply blocked all of it out.

Now it was back.

At the top of the letter was the crest of the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, and beneath it was printed: From the office of Charles Hunter. Charles had always been a succinct man. His words—and emotions—were always precisely chosen and to the point. The letter was brief.

Dear Will,

Thank you for your phone call regarding certain issues you feel the need to raise with me. As I mentioned on the phone, I am unsure why you believe it necessary to burden me with such nonsense. If you insist on experiencing these absurd adolescent growing pains, let me assure you that I pay Felix more than enough to deal with these matters. If you want me to leave you with any fatherly advice at all, it is this: any inclination toward homosexual tendencies is unnatural, self-indulgent, attention-seeking, and impure. I would greatly appreciate it if you would refrain from raising such matters with me ever again.

Yours sincerely,

Charles Hunter
